First Spouses To Assist Safe America
Participating with both ‘Drill Down’ and March to 1 Million
Last year’s success at involving First Spouse’s in 10 states in the ‘9/11 Drill Down for Safety’ program is leading to an ‘encore opportunity,’ with former West Virginia First Lady Gayle C. Manchin helping recruit other spouses of Governors in key states to serve as ‘Regional Honorary Spokespersons.’
A meeting in Washington in late February will outline the opportunity for First Spouses to serve in the 2011 program, along with the related national tour in honor of the 10th Anniversary of 9/11.
Executive Vice President for Programming Mary Lou Pagano said that Safe America wants to use First Spouses because they have a ‘good recognition factor’ and are well-liked as civic leaders. “This is right up their alley – asking them to be local spokespeople… and tell their states’ citizens the value of preparedness training and drills,” Mrs. Pagano said.
She also noted that the idea of a multi-state ‘tour’ – which is being planned for this summer – is to help people recognize the progress made over the past 10 years in emergency readiness. The ‘911 Remembrance Tour’ is being planned to start in New York City and visit select states that were directly affected by the 9/11 terrorist attacks or have suffered other tragedies of significant proportions such as hurricanes (New Orleans and the Gulf Coast); domestic mass shooter violence (Oklahoma City and Phoenix); and earthquakes (the Pacific coast).
Safe America will seek to engage the First Spouse in each state that will be participating in this event, to encourage citizens to “pledge to drill” in honor of 9/11 and to Text First. Talk Second in the event of an emergency.
